Voodoo Dice Bags

Here’s a little treat for everyone. A pattern for little dice bags. I made them for my little ones who requested dice bags for their two sets of dice. I didn’t want to make anything too big so this is what came of that.

Supplies

Hook: 5 mm Hook
Yarn: Worsted Weight – I used Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek
Approx. 150 to 200 Yards for Main Color (I used Linen)
Approx. 5 to 10 Yards for Secondary Color
Notions: Crochet Needle, Scissors, and Embroidery Thread

Additional Notes: This pattern is in US Terminology. Worked in the round.

Stitch Library

ch – Chain Stitchsl
st – Slip Stitch
sc – Single Crochet
dc – Double Crochet
Inv Dec – Invisible Decrease
MC – Magic Circle
B/O – Bind Off

Round 1: With Main Color, 6sc in MC (6)

Round 2: Inc in each sc (12)

Round 3: (inc, sc), around (18 )

Round 4: (inc, 2sc), around (24)

Round 5: (inc, 3sc), around (30)

Round 6: (inc, 4sc), around (36)

If you haven’t already, weave in the starting tail so you don’t have to turn your project inside out.

Drawstring Cords

I just used braided yarn with some pony beads to create the drawstrings. I think it creates more of a “patchwork” look for the Voodoo Bags.

For the bags, I made drawstrings that were about 10-11 inches and laced it around the whole bag.

Note: Braid, add beads for one side, lace and then add beads for last side and knot.

Bow

Row 1: Ch 11 (11)

Row 2: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Ch 1, turn (10)

Row 3-9: Sc across, ch1, turn (10)

Row 10: Sc across, ch1, turn so you are working on the side. Sc 8-10 times down the side, ch 1, turn to work along bottom. Sc 10 across, ch 1, turn to work on last side. Sc 8-10 times along side. Inv join with first stitch of the round and weave in ends.

Squish your square in a Z type pattern and take a long piece of yarn with a crochet needle and wrap it around and through the center piece to hold it tight. Leave a long tail on both side to attach to the bag. Attach wherever you would like.

Top Hat

Round 1:6sc in MC (6)

Round 2: Inc in each sc (12)

Round 3: (inc, sc), around (18 )

Round 4: (inc, 2sc), around (24)

Round 5: (inc, 3sc), around (30)

Round 6: Sc in BLO around

Round 7-8: Sc around

Round 14: (inv dec, 3sc) around (24)

Round 15: (inv dec, 2sc) around (18)

Round 16: Sc around

Round 17: (inc, 2sc), around (24)

Round 18: (inc, 3sc), around (30)

Round 19: (Inc, 4sc), around (36)

Inv Join and weave in ends. Using embroidery thread, make any stitches and marks on the hat that you wish.

Close the Boy dice bag and place the hat on top. Make a note of which row in the back it sits on and sew it into place so that it flips over onto the top when you close it.

And now you have two little dice bags for gifts, kids or yourself.

Behold The Great One

Did I really finish it?

A sense of accomplishment wells inside me as seven little eyes stare at me from the table.

It’s been a long and frustrating couple months as I worked on the challenge my fiance gave me.

I had just finished a creating a dragon egg dice bag for one of our D&D players, my brother actually, and my fiance just kind of gives me a really excited look and says, “Beholder! You should make a Beholder!”

So I start searching and showing him different patterns already available. Both of us can be a bit picky and couldn’t find anything we liked. His next words, “Bet you can’t make one.”

Boy, does he know me or what?

Challenge accepted!

I started wrapping my head around designing a crochet pattern. It wasn’t easy. I had to figure out a lot of things. Mainly, the eye stalks. How was I going to make them look real enough that I would be satisfied? Or how about whether it would be best as a drawstring or zippered? Where should the opening be? I made three before I was happy. The last one ended up perfect and I wrote the pattern along the way so it was easier at the end though my notes were a bit of a mess.

I think the most helpful thing in the process was my fiance, Mike, who dealt with all my irritation when something didn’t work and my excitement when it went as planned. His criticism and ideas when I was stuck or dissatisfied with something. Having someone that you respect their opinion can be a gold mine. Also helps when they don’t know your craft so they have no preconceived notions whether it will work or not.

The above Beholder was version one. Initial thought process was that it would “eat” the dice and the teeth would be behind the zipper. I hated how this one looked. Picky, remember? However, I loved how the eyestalks came out. Time to redesign. Move the opening from the mouth to the back and change the main eye.

With this Beholder, I changed the main eye to look like a cat’s eye. I also moved the zipper to the back and tried to do an open mouth with teeth. I also slowly made the bottom slowly to try and do a gaping mouth effect. That didn’t work out so well. So on to another redesign.

With this version, I was very happy. I found a technique from another designer called the Open Mouth Technique and used that to great effect. A smaller hook for the teeth so they weren’t huge and moved the zipper to the top of the Beholder. I was finally happy. Now to decipher my notes and create the pattern for testing.

With the pattern now in testing, it’s off to my next project!
